Don Bullard

Dear Concerned Reader,

This letter is to help provide a balanced understanding of an unfortunate incident that has gone far to spoil Don Bullard’s reputation as a war hero, businessman and philanthropist.

In September of 2009, Don was accused by the Wilmington Police Department of being involved in the sale and distribution of illegal drugs. The Police based this arrest on the testimony of two unreliable witnesses who were later sentenced to several years in federal prison for the possession drugs and unregistered hand guns found at their home at the time of arrest. Two months later, after the damage had been done to his reputation, the authorities dropped all the charges after the evidence they found at the time of arrest was proven to be harmless. The single “round blue pill police seized…wasn’t ecstasy after all.” The pill the authorities had used to justify Don’s arrest turned out to be an over–the-counter medication similar to NoDoz. The New Hanover County Distry Attourney’s Office formally dropped the charges in November 2009 and the arrest record was later expunged by District Court Judge Rebecca W. Blackmore.

Don Bullard has a long history as an upstanding member of the Wilmington community. In his younger years, Don joined the U.S. Army and served three tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. He was promoted to the rank of Captain at the age of 22, and was later awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star, 35 Air Medals, the Army Commendation Medal and a Purple Heart. After recovering from his wounds, Don returned home to Wilmington in 1972 to start an insurance agency. His success as a certified State Farm agent is unparalleled. He was awarded the Presidents Club Trophy 12 times and has qualified as a president’s club member over 70 times. At the company’s request he was sent to over 15 different regions to assist in the development of other agencies in their career development. Don has also spent countless hours giving back to the community. He has served as a volunteer and donor for the Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, Cape Fear Literacy Council, Sertoma Club and Kiwanis Club.
